ISDI (Ikatan Sindroma Down Indonesia or Indonesian Down
syndrome Society) was formally established on 21 st April 1999. A
non-profit support group of parents, medical professions, special-needs
experts, teachers, and all of those who have deep concern.
We, as parents are very concerned of the future of children with Down
syndrome in Indonesia especially when little is done to support them by
the government or other non-profit organizations. We so look forward
towards a better future by sharing our experiences and supporting each
other in our monthly gatherings. This way we gain knowledge and our
children benefit from our experiences.
We create social awareness by exposing our children to the community from
the nearest and smallest such as our neighbors to the larger community
by way of the media doing performances in public events and charitable
deeds such as assisting the needy and the old.
As they have the same rights to be heard, seen and be given the same
opportunities, we also try to prepare them by giving them various
vocational trainings to suit their abilities and guiding them to reach
their maximum potentials. This way we hope they will be able to live
independently and be free of the negative label they are carrying now.
So life seems to be bearable and the horizon seems to open up to give
way for a bright and fruitful futures.
Our Short-term goals are:
1. To become an informative centre for
families and anyone interested or related to down syndrome.
2. To generate a feeling of belonging for
families and people with Down syndrome sharing experiences of joy and
sadness and supporting each other.
3. To educate us all by providing short
seminars covering extensive topics related to Down syndrome.
4. To give special attention to maximize
their potentials in performing arts, music and dances, sports and job
trainings.
5. To build network with related medical
experts, educators in special needs, schools and volunteers.
Our long-term goals are:
1. To elevate their self esteem by
recognizing their potentials.
2. To provide hands-on training for
simple tasks in office administration, food industry or hotels.
3. To build a centre to accommodate their
needs and provide a safe haven.
4. To raise awareness to the community at
large by use of the media.
